You are invited to DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, a pop-up vintage market/party for one day only and the best way to turn a few bucks into treasure on a Sunday afternoon. The event is being thrown by Tessi & June, a Brooklyn-based duo whose company specializes in putting vintage fashions in line with contemporary trends. Come down to Greenpoint Avenue off of Franklin--the hippest drag this side of the East River--browse, buy, and do the twist and the moonwalk to vintage tunes spun by a killer roster of local DJs including DJ Tiny Pants (Love Brigade), Kids with Snakes, Daniel Casanova, and Miss June D. The artist J. Penry (check out his killer flyer attached) will be in attendance doing live portraits.
Apparel (vintage and a few new local independent designers), jewelry, knick-knacks, artwork, furniture, records and more will be for sale. Revamp your wardrobe with one-of-a-kind dresses, skirts, suits, ties, shoes, purses, jewelry, and more. From the 40s through the 80s, from prim and pretty to wacky, glam and fabulous, Dirty Pretty Things will feature carefully selected vintage from dealers from New York and across the country. All found under one roof at the Brooklyn Parlour on 72 Greenpoint Avenue, a salon from a bygone era that has retained its nostalgic aesthetic for the benefit of vintage fans everywhere. And it's one-day only, so don't miss it!

Specimen just got another shout out in NYLON mag! Just got back from a fabric research trip to Paris and London, resurrected some inspiration from the effortlessly and classically cool Parisians. A small shop across the street from my hotel housed an antique elephant skull keeping grim surveillance. Laying on the table beneath it was a blackened lattice-work carved cow skull. Serious.
Specimen will be at the Flea this Sunday in a 10X10 booth shared with Melody's Addiction. Come by!

Molokai live

A week fresh from Hawaii, and a quick virgin visit to Molokai for some skindiving, folks, and fun. The house we stayed conveniently had a flourishing 100yd. reef right out back for us to play in. The palm tree in the yard boasted the remains of the previous catches....

Baby doll cries for the death of winter

Thank you Melody, for the lovely portrait of the crying Baby doll that watched over the specimen jewelry this Sunday. She had the best seat in the house. Oooh! Look at those pretty earrings!

Reminder: May 4th is the next time specimen will make an appearance at the Flea with loads of new trinkets and treasures for the people.

Flea opening

The first Flea was a success despite the frigid temperatures and blustery winds. The people were excited to be out in the community post-winter, mingling and mixing amongst their neighbors. The specimen & Melody's addiction booth was filled with old friends and new acquaintances.

More things for this Sunday: Lots new of feather earrings mixed with chains and bones- Come check it out! Photos of the new goods are pictured in the "collection" slideshow.

This will be the last Sunday specimen will be at the Flea this month, and will not be making another appearance until Sunday, April 4th.

Philly bones

Last weekend I ended up at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology while on a day trip to Philly. They have an impressive variety of native artifacts from burial trinkets to mummies to an actual sphinx. I got some great inspiration from the American Southwest, Mayan, and Inuit weapons and jewelry. The Inuit fishing hooks were my favorite.

In the way of Popo

The idea of rationing hasn't entered our daily lives for a couple of generations now, but it was a normal way of life for those that lived through war-time conservation. Born of this time were unique things of necessity that have found a permanent place in our society today, like the Levis 501 selvedge denim, pantyhose, and the woman factory worker. I remember as a child how my grandma, a.k.a. popo, had a use for every scrap of food she prepared for us: from saving the slop for the pigs, to letting our dog gnaw the bones to edible (but not very digestible) splinters, then using the dog shit to fertilize the plants. It was an understanding that things were never wasted, everything had an end purpose. If only I knew how to whittle bone into tiny pieces of preciousness, I could've started this much earlier. Everything organic I use for specimen is a bi-product from it's source, never the main product. I'm just finding my own way of emulating my popo.
